The highly portable Sky-Watcher STAR DISCOVERY Alt-Azimuth Mount, with the Synscan™ Wi-Fi module, has been designed to be controlled wirelessly with your Smartphone or Tablet, using the free SynScan App for iOS or Android.
The supplied Wi-Fi module creates its very own Wi-Fi network, so the mount can be used anywhere, without any reliance on other WiFi networks. After entering your coordinates into the App and following a simple alignment procedure, you are ready to explore the universe using the App’s intuitive touchscreen menu. The SynScan App provides full computerised GO-TO control to the mount, allowing your telescope to be automatically slewed to any one of the objects in the App’s extensive database of 10,000+ celestial objects.
Incorporates Sky-Watcher’s Freedom-Find™ patented Dual-Encoder Technology, which allows the telescope to be moved manually on either axis without the mount losing its positional information. This gives the user enormous freedom, convenience and flexibility during observational sessions. The mount is quiet in operation, has a payload capacity of up to 5kg and accepts telescopes with standard 45mm Dovetail Bars.

Dobsonian telescopes offer an incredible aperture-to-price ratio. The Dobsonian mount, popularized by John Dobson in 1970's, is a simple and efficient method of mounting a Newtonian reflector, based on the Alt-Azimuth principle. Fast and easy to set up, the Dobsonian mount consists of a box-type mounting that allows the telescope to pivot in altitude, while the box itself is rotated on a base in azimuth. The secret of the design is to correctly balance the optical tube and use frictional materials which allow it to be moved easily when nudged but to stay in position when not. The mount is designed to be driven by hand as opposed to slow-motion controls. Sky-Watcher Dobsonians provide excellent all-round performance for the observation of the Moon and Planets and Deep Sky Objects such as Galaxies and Nebulae.

'Our first test on the Sky-Watcher Explorer-130 was to check the collimation of the mirrors, which we found were well aligned. This scope has one of the largest mirrors in its price range, which is a great asset because it means it can gather more light...Optically, the quality of the field of view while studying the star Altair was very good using the supplied 25mm eyepiece. The star remained sharp across 80 per cent of the view, with only slight distortion close to the field edges….Taking everything into account, this telescope made observing the night sky enjoyable and relatively hassle free….great views coupled with ease of use.'BBC Sky At Night MagazineThe Sky-Watcher EXPLORER-130M is identical to the award winning EXPLORER-130M model but supplied with a handset operated motor drive, in addition, to automatically track night sky objects. A fantastic choice for the serious beginner and also receives high marks from more seasoned astronomers. With an extremely useful 130mm of light gathering aperture, this telescope is a highly capable all-rounder for the observation of the Moon, bright planets, nebulae, galaxies and star clusters. Supplied with the EQ2 equatorial mount, which when polar aligned, will allow you to easily track objects as they move across the night sky via its slow motion control cables, or automatically with the supplied motor drive unit.
