More information about the Canon RF-S lens mount
The Canon RF-S lens mount is a variation of the full-frame Canon RF lens mount. It is designed for use with Canon's APS-C sensor cameras, such as the EOS R7 and R10. RF-S lenses produce a smaller image circle than RF lenses, which allows them to be smaller and lighter. They also have a shorter flange-back distance, which gives lens designers more flexibility in creating new optical designs.
Benefits of the RF-S lenses
- Smaller and lighter than RF lenses
- More affordable than RF lenses
- Designed specifically for APS-C sensor cameras, so they provide optimal image quality
- Compatible with all Canon EOS R system cameras, but require a firmware update to tell the camera to crop to the APS-C format when an RF-S lens is mounted
Current RF-S lenses
As of November 3, 2023, there are two RF-S lenses available:
- RF-S 18-150mm f/3.5-6.3 IS STM
- RF-S 10-40mm f/4.5-5.6 IS STM
- Canon RF-S 10-18mm F4.5-6.3mm IS STM
More RF-S lenses are expected to be released in the future.
Compatibility
RF-S lenses are compatible with all Canon EOS R system cameras, but require a firmware update to tell the camera to crop to the APS-C format when an RF-S lens is mounted. Canon has announced that a firmware update is coming, but we don't yet know when it will be available.
Conclusion
The Canon RF-S lens mount is a new and exciting development for APS-C sensor cameras. It offers the benefits of the RF mount, such as fast communication speed and increased bandwidth between camera and lens, in a smaller and more affordable package. As more RF-S lenses are released, it will become an even more attractive option for APS-C shooters.
