Product Description

Samyang AF 85mm F1.4 II Sony FE Lens

This small and lightweight lens offers superior optical performance, improved AF technology, and enhanced user convenience. The 4 HR and 1 ED glass elements maximize the optical performance. Equipped with the linear STM motor, AF is faster, quieter, and more accurate.

The 2nd Generation
Meet the AF 85mm F1.4 FE II lens, the second edition of the AF 85mm F1.4 FE that many people have loved since Samyang released its first autofocus lens. To commemorate the 50th anniversary of the founding of Samyang Optics, Samyang Optics is introducing second-generation AF lenses with upgraded performance. Starting with the first renewal product, the AF 50mm F1.4 FE II, the AF 35mm F1.4 FE II, and this time the AF 85mm F1.4 FE II second-generation lens is newly announced.

  • Smaller size and lighter weight
  • Excellent resolution and creamy bokeh from F1.4 fast lens
  • Quieter, faster and more accurate AF performance with linear STM motor
  • Professional control & upgraded reliability

Unprecedented Resolution in Smaller & Lighter 85mm
The AF 85mm F1.4 FE II is the lightest lens(509g/18.0oz weight) among all the large-aperture 85mm focal length lenses compatible with the Sony FE mount, so it's even a perfect match to compact Sony mirrorless cameras with a gimbal. Not only superb resolution but also weight is important when shooting portraits. Especially in a handheld shooting environment, the benefit of the lightweight lens is huge, so innovative technology was needed to combine resolution and weight at the same time. The Samyang AF 85mm F1.4 FE II is lighter than other 85mm lenses compatible with full-frame Sony FE mount, but it expresses the subject with clear image quality.

Outstanding Center Resolution & Colour
The 4 HR (High Refractive) and 1 ED (Extra-Low Dispersion) glass elements of this new AF 85mm F1.4 FE II provide a stunning contrast and resolution, and its center resolution is superior to other comparable expensive telephoto lenses. Samyang's advanced coating technology maintains excellent image sharpness even in poor lighting conditions. The AF 85mm F1.4 FE II also provides a clearer image with an improved Colour Contribution Index (CCI).

Extremely Clean & Beautiful Bokeh
F1.4 large-diameter aperture maximizes the extremely narrow depth of field expression. Its smooth blurred background can make subjects stand out in images and natural bokeh provides an artistic view. The AF 85mm F1.4 FE II is the only FE mount lens that does not feature even a single aspherical glass. If an aspherical glass is used to improve its optical performance, there should be onion rings in the bokeh, which is a negative factor in the bokeh evaluation. Since the AF 85mm F1.4 FE II does not feature any aspherical glass in its elements, it has clear and beautiful bokeh!

Faster, Quieter, Precise Auto Focus Performance
Samyang’s Linear Stepping Motor (STM) provides the high-thrust efficiency needed for fast, precise, quiet AF and tracking, thus maximizing the advantages of Sony E-Mount cameras. Compared to the previous AF 85mm F1.4 FE, this new AF 85mm F1.4 FE II is optimized for not only photo shooting but also video shooting by minimizing vibration and noise. Tracking the subject accurately and quickly, the AF also operates quietly and smoothly when shooting video.

Short Minimum Focal Distance 0.85m (2.79ft)
The minimum focal distance is just 85cm (2.79ft), so it produces impressive close-ups, even capturing small details, at very close to the subject. With a short minimum focal distance and large aperture of the AF 85mm F1.4 FE II, you can get close-ups by highlighting the subject with a smoothly expressed background!

Weather-Sealing & Modern Design
The AF 85mm F1.4 FE II has been developed and enhanced, taking into consideration not only the design but also the user's shooting environment. It features a rubberized micro-patterned focus ring, stylish silver ring, hidden red ring, and matte finish which feels great to operate and the weather-sealing (in 7 areas) protects the lens from light rain, snow, and dust.

Understanding: Aperture

Aperture is the opening in a camera lens that controls how much light enters the camera. It's measured in f-stops like f/2.8 or f/8. Lower f-stop numbers mean wider openings, letting in more light and creating a shallow depth of field (blurry background). Higher f-stop numbers mean smaller openings, letting in less light and creating a larger depth of field (more of the scene in focus). Aperture also affects the quality of out-of-focus areas in the image (bokeh).

Understanding: Lens Types

Different lenses have different purposes to achieve different styles of images, some popular ones include:
Prime Lens: Fixed focal length, sharp images, great for portraits and dark settings.
Zoom Lens: Variable focal length, versatile for different shots and everyday use..
Wide-Angle Lens: Captures wide scenes like landscapes.
Telephoto Lens: Magnifies distant subjects, ideal for sports & wildlife.
Macro Lens: Perfect for close-up photography of small subjects.
Fisheye Lens: Ultra-wide perspective, creates unique images.

Understanding: Lens Mounts

Different camera brands use different lens mounts, which are like connectors that attach lenses to camera bodies. Each mount is specific to a particular brand and camera series. For example, Canon uses the EF and RF mounts, Nikon uses the F mount, Sony uses the E mount for its mirrorless cameras. These mounts dictate which lenses are compatible with which cameras. Some brands offer adapters to use lenses from other systems, but it's essential to ensure compatibility for proper functionality and autofocus performance.

Understanding: Manual and Autofocus

Manual focus and autofocus are two ways to adjust the sharpness of a camera lens. With manual focus, you turn a ring on the lens to bring the subject into focus yourself, giving you full control over what appears sharp in the image. Autofocus, on the other hand, relies on the camera's built-in technology to automatically adjust the focus for you, usually by detecting contrast or phase differences in the scene. Autofocus can be convenient, especially for fast-moving subjects or when you need to capture a quick shot, whereas manual focus allows for precise adjustments and creative control over the final image.
