Impressive Views of the Night Sky

With its generous 203mm aperture, the Skyliner 200P can reveal far more than a smaller beginner telescope. Under suitable viewing conditions, possible targets include:

  • Craters, mountain ranges and valleys across the lunar surface

  • Jupiter’s cloud bands and four bright Galilean moons

  • Saturn’s rings

  • The phases of Venus

  • Surface features on Mars when it is favourably positioned

  • The Orion Nebula and other bright nebulae

  • Open and globular star clusters

  • The Andromeda Galaxy and other brighter galaxies

  • Double stars and many Messier catalogue objects

The combination of a large aperture and 1200mm focal length makes this a versatile all-round telescope for both Solar System and deep-sky observation.

Simple Manual Operation

The Skyliner 200P uses a traditional Dobsonian mount, designed to make observing as straightforward as possible. There are no electronics, motors or complicated alignment procedures to configure. Simply position the telescope on a stable surface, insert an eyepiece and guide the optical tube towards your chosen target by hand.

Smooth movement in altitude and azimuth allows the telescope to be gently directed across the sky. Adjustable tension-control handles help maintain the correct balance when changing eyepieces or adding accessories, while also doubling as practical carrying handles.

This intuitive design makes the telescope approachable for beginners while remaining highly capable for experienced visual observers.

Outstanding Aperture for the Price

Dobsonian telescopes are frequently referred to as “light buckets” because they provide a particularly large aperture for their cost.

Rather than investing heavily in electronics and complex mounting systems, the Skyliner 200P places the emphasis on optical performance. Its 203mm primary mirror gathers approximately 77% more light than a 150mm telescope, helping to reveal fainter targets and additional detail.

For anyone looking to maximise visual performance within their budget, an 8-inch Dobsonian remains one of the most compelling telescope choices available.

High-Quality Parabolic Mirror

At the heart of the Skyliner 200P is a diffraction-limited parabolic primary mirror. Its carefully figured shape brings incoming light rays to the same focal point, helping to eliminate the spherical aberration associated with basic spherical mirrors.

This produces sharp, high-contrast views filled with detail.

The primary and secondary mirrors are manufactured from low-expansion borosilicate glass. This material is less affected by temperature changes than conventional glass, allowing the mirrors to reach thermal equilibrium more quickly while retaining their intended shape during cooling.

The result is improved optical stability and the potential to begin enjoying clearer views sooner.

RAQ™ High-Reflectivity Coatings

Both mirrors feature Sky-Watcher’s RAQ™ Radiant Aluminium Quartz coatings.

These durable multilayer coatings combine aluminium with protective dielectric tantalum pentoxide and silicon dioxide layers. They provide reflectivity of up to 94%, helping more collected light reach the eyepiece while protecting the mirror surfaces for long-term performance.

Four rigid 0.5mm ultra-thin spider vanes support the secondary mirror. Their slim profile reduces obstruction within the light path and helps keep diffraction effects to a minimum.

Smooth and Stable Dobsonian Base

The wooden alt-azimuth base uses low-friction bearings for smooth movement around the night sky. The telescope can be moved with a gentle push while remaining stable when released.

Adjustable tension handles allow the resistance of the altitude movement to be altered quickly. This is particularly useful when changing between lighter and heavier eyepieces, helping the optical tube remain properly balanced.

The optical tube can also be separated from the base for easier storage and transportation. A built-in accessory tray provides a convenient place to keep eyepieces and other small items during an observing session.

Enhanced Accessory Package

This enhanced version of the Skyliner 200P includes several valuable accessories.

The 90° angled 9x50 erect-image finderscope provides a more comfortable viewing position than a standard straight-through finder. Its correctly orientated image also makes comparing the view with a printed star chart easier.

Two 70° super-wide-angle eyepieces are included:

  • 20mm eyepiece: Provides 60x magnification for locating targets and enjoying wider views

  • 12.5mm eyepiece: Provides 96x magnification for closer views of the Moon, planets and smaller deep-sky objects

The wide apparent field of view creates a more immersive observing experience while making targets easier to follow as they move across the sky.

Capture the Moon with Your Smartphone

A universal smartphone adaptor is included, allowing compatible phones between 54mm and 90mm wide to be positioned over the eyepiece.

This offers a straightforward introduction to smartphone astrophotography and is particularly well suited to capturing images and short videos of bright subjects such as the Moon.

Although primarily designed for visual astronomy, the telescope also supports a direct SLR camera connection. Its manual Dobsonian mount is not intended for conventional long-exposure deep-sky astrophotography.

Precision Crayford Focuser

The Skyliner 200P is equipped with a smooth 2-inch precision Crayford focuser and includes adaptors for both 2-inch and 1.25-inch eyepieces.

The supplied 1.25-inch adaptor features a brass compression ring, holding accessories securely without marking their barrels. Compatibility with both popular eyepiece sizes also provides plenty of scope for future upgrades.

Practical White Optical Tube

The rolled-steel optical tube is finished in Sky-Watcher’s distinctive white paint.

As well as giving the telescope its classic appearance, the bright finish improves its visibility in dark observing environments. This can reduce the chance of accidentally walking into or knocking the telescope while moving around at night.
