Product Description

Sigma 150-600mm F5-6.3 DG OS HSM - Contemporary

A sharp, fast, and portable ultra-telephoto zoom for DSLR cameras.

Class-Leading Optical Performance

Featuring a highly versatile focal range, this portable ultra-telephoto zoom lens is ideal for professional sports, wildlife, aviation, and motorsport photography. Designed for outdoor environments, the lens has a robust build with a dust- and splash-resistant mount and a special water- and oil-repellent coating on the front element.

The sophisticated optical design includes 1 FLD element and 3 SLD elements, delivering razor-sharp results at all apertures with minimal chromatic aberration and well-controlled flare. Despite its capabilities, the lens remains exceptionally portable, weighing less than 2kg. Its intelligent two-mode Optical Stabilizer and detachable tripod socket make it suitable for hand-holding rather than working from a tripod. This combination of powerful optics and outstanding usability makes the 150-600mm F5-6.3 DG OS HSM | Contemporary one of the most versatile and popular ultra-telephoto zooms on the market.

Key Optical Features:

  • Versatile Focal Range: Ideal for sports, wildlife, aviation, and motorsport photography.
  • Low-Dispersion Elements: 1 FLD and 3 SLD elements for minimal chromatic aberration.
  • Lightweight Design: Weighs less than 2kg, suitable for hand-held use.
  • Two-Mode Optical Stabilizer: Ensures stability and sharpness in various conditions.

Outstanding Build Quality

The exterior barrel of the 150-600mm is constructed using Thermally Stable Composite (TSC), which has a similar thermal expansion rate to aluminium, ensuring consistent performance across temperature changes. TSC is also lightweight and strong, providing a premium look and feel.

The rubberised zoom ring allows easier operation and can be locked at various positions using the Lock switch. At the rear of the lens is a tripod collar and foot, which can be rotated to easily switch between portrait and landscape orientation when mounted on a tripod. The durable brass mount is surrounded by a rubber seal to keep out dust and moisture.

Key Build Features:

  • Thermally Stable Composite: Strong and lightweight with consistent performance.
  • Rubberised Zoom Ring: Easier operation with lock switch.
  • Rotatable Tripod Collar: Facilitates quick orientation changes.
  • Durable Brass Mount: Includes a rubber seal for dust and moisture resistance.

Professional Feature-Set

The lens includes an AF/MF switch with manual focus override, allowing manual focus adjustments during AF, and a Custom Mode switch for customising the lens setup using the USB Dock (sold separately). It also has a focus limiter to reduce the focusing range for faster and more accurate operation, useful when there are objects in the frame between the camera and the subject.

The in-built Optical Stabilizer has a mode for general shooting and one for panning, ideal for fast-moving subjects such as birds and vehicles. The lens features an HSM focus motor for smooth, fast, and accurate AF for both stills and video, fully compatible with the latest AF camera technology.

Key Features:

  • AF/MF Switch: Allows manual focus override.
  • Custom Mode Switch: Customise setup with USB Dock.
  • Focus Limiter: Faster and more accurate focusing.
  • Optical Stabilizer: Includes general shooting and panning modes.
  • HSM Focus Motor: Smooth, fast, and accurate AF.

Tripod Collar Included

Mounting a heavy lens and camera on a tripod using the camera’s tripod thread can strain the thread and mounts. The 150-600mm includes a tripod collar and foot, providing a balanced setup that attaches close to the centre of gravity. The collar can be rotated 90 degrees for quick switching to portrait orientation.

High-Performance Optics

Despite its lightweight design, the 150-600mm F5-6.3 DG OS HSM | C delivers outstanding optical quality even on high-resolution sensors. The optical performance is maintained across the whole frame, rendering fine detail perfectly into the corners.

The lens features an advanced optical design with 20 elements in 14 groups, including 3 SLD elements and 1 FLD element. These ensure razor-sharp results and help to eliminate chromatic aberration, flare, distortion, and vignetting. Advanced optical coatings reduce flare and ghosting in bright sunlight, creating high-contrast images with rich colours and strong blacks.

Key Optical Features:

  • Advanced Optical Design: 20 elements in 14 groups.
  • Low-Dispersion Elements: 3 SLD and 1 FLD element.
  • Advanced Coatings: Reduce flare and ghosting.

Ideal for Fast-Action Sports

Thanks to its fast and accurate AF and Optical Stabilizer with panning mode, the 150-600mm is ideal for motorsport, extreme sports, and aviation photography. It is also light enough for hand-held use for relatively long periods, weighing under 2kg.

Key Features:

  • Fast and Accurate AF: Ideal for motorsport and aviation.
  • Lightweight Design: Suitable for hand-held use.

Perfect for Longer Landscapes

The portability and exceptional image quality of the 150-600mm make it a useful tool for landscape photographers, allowing them to capture small vignettes within the landscape and compress the perspective.

Compact and Lightweight

At under 2kg, the 150-600mm F5-6.3 DG OS HSM | C is exceptionally light for an ultra-telephoto lens. It is roughly the same length as the 60-600mm but more than 750g lighter, making it ideal for photographers who need to carry their kit over long distances.

Compatible with Teleconverters

The lens is compatible with SIGMA's teleconverters, the TC-1401 1.4x converter (producing MF 210-840mm F7-9) and the TC-2001 2x converter (producing MF 300-1200mm F10-12.6). The TC-1401 offers autofocus up to F8 on cameras that support F8 AF.

Key Features:

  • Compatible Teleconverters: TC-1401 1.4x and TC-2001 2x converters.
  • Extended Focal Range: Up to 1200mm with teleconverters.

The Sigma 150-600mm F5-6.3 DG OS HSM | Contemporary lens combines class-leading optical performance, outstanding build quality, and a comprehensive feature set, making it a top choice for both professional and enthusiast photographers.

Understanding: Aperture

Aperture is the opening in a camera lens that controls how much light enters the camera. It's measured in f-stops like f/2.8 or f/8. Lower f-stop numbers mean wider openings, letting in more light and creating a shallow depth of field (blurry background). Higher f-stop numbers mean smaller openings, letting in less light and creating a larger depth of field (more of the scene in focus). Aperture also affects the quality of out-of-focus areas in the image (bokeh).

Understanding: Lens Types

Different lenses have different purposes to achieve different styles of images, some popular ones include:
Prime Lens: Fixed focal length, sharp images, great for portraits and dark settings.
Zoom Lens: Variable focal length, versatile for different shots and everyday use..
Wide-Angle Lens: Captures wide scenes like landscapes.
Telephoto Lens: Magnifies distant subjects, ideal for sports & wildlife.
Macro Lens: Perfect for close-up photography of small subjects.
Fisheye Lens: Ultra-wide perspective, creates unique images.

Understanding: Lens Mounts

Different camera brands use different lens mounts, which are like connectors that attach lenses to camera bodies. Each mount is specific to a particular brand and camera series. For example, Canon uses the EF and RF mounts, Nikon uses the F mount, Sony uses the E mount for its mirrorless cameras. These mounts dictate which lenses are compatible with which cameras. Some brands offer adapters to use lenses from other systems, but it's essential to ensure compatibility for proper functionality and autofocus performance.

Understanding: Manual and Autofocus

Manual focus and autofocus are two ways to adjust the sharpness of a camera lens. With manual focus, you turn a ring on the lens to bring the subject into focus yourself, giving you full control over what appears sharp in the image. Autofocus, on the other hand, relies on the camera's built-in technology to automatically adjust the focus for you, usually by detecting contrast or phase differences in the scene. Autofocus can be convenient, especially for fast-moving subjects or when you need to capture a quick shot, whereas manual focus allows for precise adjustments and creative control over the final image.
