Product Description

Canon RF 85mm f1.2 L USM Lens

The Canon RF 85mm f1.2L USM Lens is the fastest portrait prime in the EOS R system. Great for shooting in low light and isolating the subject from its background, the lens combines a short telephoto focal length with a fast f1.2 aperture to provide an extremely shallow depth of field and incredible sharpness with pleasing bokeh. Canon’s RF lenses offer higher quality and speed with a performance optimised for the EOS R camera.

Key Features:

  • RF lens mount for Canon's EOS R mirrorless cameras
  • Short telephoto focal length perfect for portraiture, street and low light photography
  • Super-fast and wide f/1.2 aperture for shallow focus and exceptional edge-to-edge sharpness
  • Smooth, near-silent autofocusing, with Canon's USM technology
  • Blue Spectrum Refractive (BR) optics and aspheric lens element eliminates colour and spherical aberrations
  • Lens control ring for extra control over ISO, aperture and shutter
  • L-series build quality and weather-sealing

The perfect focal length for portraits
The RF 85mm F1.2L USM is the ideal short telephoto for flattering portraits, producing elegant and detailed results with a pleasing perspective and no distortion.

Fast and bright with superb optical precision
With a fast f/1.2 aperture, the lens is superb in low light offering incredible sharpness and creative expression with a pleasing and unique bokeh.

Advanced lens elements and coatings
The lens employs Blue Spectrum Refractive (BR) optics and a UD lens element which negates colour aberrations from affecting image quality, while a ground aspheric lens element ensures the highest image quality and ASC coating prevents flare and ghosting.

L-series build quality and weather-sealing
The build quality redefines L-series quality with weather-sealing and fluorine coatings on the front and rear elements to guard against water and dust.

Fast USM motor and Lens Control Ring
Thanks to the fast speed of the RF mount and the use of a large ring type USM focusing motor, the RF 85mm F1.2L USM is fast to lock onto a subject while the Lens Control Ring provides additional customisable control over settings.

RF lens mount
The RF mount has been built on the strengths of the existing EF mount and is the result of detailed research by Canon engineers, who have designed an impressive optical system with a flange back distance of 20mm and a wide 54mm diameter lens mount - allowing for faster and lighter lenses with higher performing optics. The new mount's 12-pin connection enables enhanced communication and power transmission between the lens and camera body, further enhancing lens design options, resulting in higher image quality and enhanced usability.

Understanding: Aperture

Aperture is the opening in a camera lens that controls how much light enters the camera. It's measured in f-stops like f/2.8 or f/8. Lower f-stop numbers mean wider openings, letting in more light and creating a shallow depth of field (blurry background). Higher f-stop numbers mean smaller openings, letting in less light and creating a larger depth of field (more of the scene in focus). Aperture also affects the quality of out-of-focus areas in the image (bokeh).

Understanding: Lens Types

Different lenses have different purposes to achieve different styles of images, some popular ones include:
Prime Lens: Fixed focal length, sharp images, great for portraits and dark settings.
Zoom Lens: Variable focal length, versatile for different shots and everyday use..
Wide-Angle Lens: Captures wide scenes like landscapes.
Telephoto Lens: Magnifies distant subjects, ideal for sports & wildlife.
Macro Lens: Perfect for close-up photography of small subjects.
Fisheye Lens: Ultra-wide perspective, creates unique images.

Understanding: Lens Mounts

Different camera brands use different lens mounts, which are like connectors that attach lenses to camera bodies. Each mount is specific to a particular brand and camera series. For example, Canon uses the EF and RF mounts, Nikon uses the F mount, Sony uses the E mount for its mirrorless cameras. These mounts dictate which lenses are compatible with which cameras. Some brands offer adapters to use lenses from other systems, but it's essential to ensure compatibility for proper functionality and autofocus performance.

Understanding: Manual and Autofocus

Manual focus and autofocus are two ways to adjust the sharpness of a camera lens. With manual focus, you turn a ring on the lens to bring the subject into focus yourself, giving you full control over what appears sharp in the image. Autofocus, on the other hand, relies on the camera's built-in technology to automatically adjust the focus for you, usually by detecting contrast or phase differences in the scene. Autofocus can be convenient, especially for fast-moving subjects or when you need to capture a quick shot, whereas manual focus allows for precise adjustments and creative control over the final image.
