Cinematic Image Pipeline

Full-Frame 6K Capture

The ZR’s 24.5MP partially stacked full-frame sensor and EXPEED 7 processor deliver 6K/60p and 4K/120p recording with reduced rolling shutter. Dual Base ISO 800/6400 maintains exceptional highlight retention and low-noise shadows, preserving 15+ stops of latitude for grading.

RED Colour Science & Flexible Codecs

Need maximum latitude or rapid turnaround? Choose 12-bit R3D NE, N-RAW, or ProRes RAW. For efficient delivery, record ProRes 422 HQ, H.265, or H.264. RED Log3G10 and RedWideGamutRGB ensure tonal depth and colour consistency when matching ZR footage to RED systems. Load up to 10 custom LUTs for on-set monitoring—without baking the look.

Monitoring, Controls & Usability

  • 4" Vari-Angle DCI-P3 Touchscreen (3070k-dot, 16:10, 1000 nits) for daylight-viewable monitoring and quiet tap control.

  • Shutter-angle control from 5.6° to 360° for cinematic motion blur.

  • 4 creative video modes + 9 RED Picture Controls for ready-to-share looks or neutral capture.

Sound That Saves the Take

Record 32-bit float audio from the internal mics or a compatible digital-shoe mic—no clipping, massive headroom, and flexible level recovery in post. Add traditional mics and XLR adapters when your rig demands it.

Stabilisation & Autofocus

  • 5-Axis IBIS with up to 7.5 stops of stabilisation for steady handheld sequences.

  • Focus-breathing compensation for natural rack-focus moves.

  • Nikon AF: fast, reliable subject tracking across people, animals, and vehicles, plus adjustable AF speeds for repeatable focus transitions.

Workflow, Media & Connectivity

  • Frame.io Camera-to-Cloud for instant collaboration and remote review.

  • USB-C power & data for streamlined rigs and fast offloads.

  • Dual slots: CFexpress Type B for RAW; microSD for proxies/backup.

  • Z-mount supports native Nikon glass and adapted cinema lenses.

  • Rig-ready: cages, adapters, XLR units, and field monitors supported.

Built to Go Anywhere

At ~540 g (body only) with full weather sealing, the ZR’s innovative fanless chassis quietly dissipates heat for long takes. It’s the ultimate compact full-frame cinema camera for travel, documentary, events, and agile narrative work.

FAQs

Is the Nikon ZR comparable to other Nikon models?
It’s closest in sensor architecture to the Nikon Z6 III, but the ZR is cinema-first: R3D NE in-camera, 32-bit float audio, a 4" DCI-P3 monitor, and shutter-angle control make it better suited to production environments where hybrid features are secondary.

Do I need an external monitor?
The 4" 3070k-dot / 1000-nit DCI-P3 display is one of the brightest, largest in its class and reduces the need for a separate monitor. It remains fully compatible with field monitors for larger productions.

What audio options are supported?
In-body 32-bit float recording prevents clipped tracks and preserves headroom. Add digital-shoe mics, standard 3.5mm mics, or XLR adapters (via accessories) as needed.

How long can it record continuously?
Up to ~95 minutes on battery or ~125 minutes via USB-C power, with efficient heat dissipation for long takes.

Lens compatibility?
The Z-mount supports Nikon Z lenses and adapted cine/third-party glass, letting you tailor the look for any production.
