Product Description

Sigma 24mm F1.4 DG DN - Art: A Fast, Sharp, and Versatile Wide-Angle Prime for Mirrorless

Versatile Prime with a Professional Feature Set

The Sigma 24mm F1.4 DG DN | Art is a full-frame wide-angle prime lens designed specifically for mirrorless cameras. Its versatility makes it perfect for a wide range of photo and video applications, including night sky photography, landscapes, interiors, weddings, and architecture. The ultra-wide F1.4 aperture ensures very fast shutter speeds in lower-light conditions and provides a shallow depth-of-field for pronounced subject separation.

This lens is packed with professional features, including an aperture ring with de-click and lock switches, an AFL button, a lockable lens hood, a rear filter holder, and a manual focus lock feature. Its advanced optical design includes two FLD elements, one SLD element, and four aspherical elements, minimizing chromatic aberration, sagittal coma flare, and image distortion. The result is highly detailed images with exceptional sharpness and accuracy from the centre to the edges of the frame.

Outstanding Build Quality

The 24mm F1.4 DG DN | Art is built to the highest standards, typical of Sigma’s Art line. The exterior barrel is made of Thermally Stable Composite (TSC), a polycarbonate that is both strong and lightweight, with a similar thermal expansion rate to aluminium. This ensures consistent performance as temperatures change.

The focus ring is rubberized for easier operation, and focusing is internal, meaning the lens does not change length during use. This feature makes it ideal for use on a gimbal, as the centre of gravity remains stable. The aperture ring can be de-clicked for smooth aperture changes and locked to prevent accidental adjustments. The robust petal-type lens hood features a lock button and a rubberized ring for easy fitting and removal, helping to reduce flare and protect the front element from damage.

The durable brass mount is surrounded by a rubber seal to help keep out dust and moisture, ensuring reliable performance in various conditions.

Professional Feature Set

The Sigma 24mm F1.4 DG DN | Art lens includes several professional-grade controls: an AF/MF switch, a customizable AFL button, and switches to de-click and lock the aperture ring. The Manual Focus Lock switch allows users to deactivate the focus ring after focus is acquired, preventing accidental focus shifts.

The powerful stepping motor ensures fast, accurate, and quiet autofocus, with excellent tracking capability. This makes the lens suitable for both still photography and video recording.

Rear Filter Holder

In addition to the 72mm front filter thread, the lens features a rear filter holder. Rear filters, which are the size of an SD card, are easy to handle and less prone to damage and dirt. The included template allows users to cut custom filters from gel sheets, enhancing the lens’s versatility for various shooting conditions.

High-Performance Optics

The Sigma 24mm F1.4 DG DN | Art lens delivers outstanding optical quality, with excellent detail rendering even wide open at F1.4. The advanced optical design consists of 17 elements in 14 groups, including four aspherical elements, one SLD element, and two FLD elements. This configuration ensures razor-sharp results while eliminating chromatic aberration, flare, distortion, and vignetting.

The lens features advanced Super Multi-Layer coatings to reduce flare and ghosting, producing high-contrast images with rich colours and deep blacks.

Low-Light Capability

With an F1.4 aperture, the lens collects four times more light than an F2.8 optic, making it ideal for low-light photography, such as astrophotography and nightscapes. It can capture exceptional star detail within short exposure times, and sagittal coma flare is minimal, ensuring stars remain sharp and bright even in the corners of the frame. The front and rear filter options allow easy attachment of soft filters and light pollution filters.

Understanding: Aperture

Aperture is the opening in a camera lens that controls how much light enters the camera. It's measured in f-stops like f/2.8 or f/8. Lower f-stop numbers mean wider openings, letting in more light and creating a shallow depth of field (blurry background). Higher f-stop numbers mean smaller openings, letting in less light and creating a larger depth of field (more of the scene in focus). Aperture also affects the quality of out-of-focus areas in the image (bokeh).

Understanding: Lens Types

Different lenses have different purposes to achieve different styles of images, some popular ones include:
Prime Lens: Fixed focal length, sharp images, great for portraits and dark settings.
Zoom Lens: Variable focal length, versatile for different shots and everyday use..
Wide-Angle Lens: Captures wide scenes like landscapes.
Telephoto Lens: Magnifies distant subjects, ideal for sports & wildlife.
Macro Lens: Perfect for close-up photography of small subjects.
Fisheye Lens: Ultra-wide perspective, creates unique images.

Understanding: Lens Mounts

Different camera brands use different lens mounts, which are like connectors that attach lenses to camera bodies. Each mount is specific to a particular brand and camera series. For example, Canon uses the EF and RF mounts, Nikon uses the F mount, Sony uses the E mount for its mirrorless cameras. These mounts dictate which lenses are compatible with which cameras. Some brands offer adapters to use lenses from other systems, but it's essential to ensure compatibility for proper functionality and autofocus performance.

Understanding: Manual and Autofocus

Manual focus and autofocus are two ways to adjust the sharpness of a camera lens. With manual focus, you turn a ring on the lens to bring the subject into focus yourself, giving you full control over what appears sharp in the image. Autofocus, on the other hand, relies on the camera's built-in technology to automatically adjust the focus for you, usually by detecting contrast or phase differences in the scene. Autofocus can be convenient, especially for fast-moving subjects or when you need to capture a quick shot, whereas manual focus allows for precise adjustments and creative control over the final image.
